Within the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 we learn to recognise sounds within words through phonics. We use phonics play alongside letters and sounds to create our own medium term plans. The children are taught within phase specific groups moving from phase 2, 3 and 4 in Reception to phase 5 in Year 1 and Support for Spelling in Year 2.
Our phonics lessons use a reviewing, teaching, practising and applying structure. The children review previously taught sounds, learn new sounds within the teaching, practise using these within reading and writing then apply these new skills to an activity. Within phonics we use fun and fast activities to motivate and engage the children within their learning. We use interactive games, whiteboard activities, flashcards, word lists and practical resources to teach new sounds.
