Marvellous maths!

This morning, as part of our maths enrichment day, we focused on the story of one famous Ancient Greek mathematician: Pythagoras! We read about how Pythagoras first understood ratios between numbers and objects – and potentially created the first ‘rock’ group (although we’re not sure that’s actually true…)!

We summarised and retold this story through some very creative and imaginative dramatisations, before exploring some more of Pythagoras’s work on square numbers. This was definitely a challenge – with only a few groups fully completing the challenge in time. Excellent work to the team who completed the task in a record-breaking (if we had records to break!) 25 minutes exactly! And a very valiant effort to the runners up who came in at 36:47.

The afternoon saw us stay within Ancient Greece, but this time focus on creating our own Greek inspired items: a temple and Trojan horse. Armed only with cardboard, paper, masking tape and our a little knowledge of creating nets we managed to create some impressive models of the two!

Class 9 – what have you learnt about maths from today?
