Primary Football Champions League Tournament Review

After months of waiting, on Saturday 18th June at 9am Park Grove took to the field at Milthorpe School to play against the six other victorious York primary football league winners: Heworth, Knavesmire, St George’s, Our Lady Queen of Marty’s, Hempland and St Mary’s in the much-vaunted Champions League tournament.

In front of a packed and vociferous crowd including the legendary Mr Currie, Park Grove’s opening fixture was against Knavesmire. The match started off quickly with two evenly and well matched teams playing impressive attacking football. Just before half time, an inswinging corner by Knavesmire was unfortunately bundled into his own net by Tom Carter. The scoreline remained 1-0 to Knavesmire despite pressure from Park Grove in the second half – Louie Powell being particularly unlucky when his thunderous drive hit the bar. The second match pitted Park Grove against Heworth and the boys in blue(Park Grove) looked galvanized with beautiful build-up play allowing Ben Bellerby to open Park Grove’s goal tally for the day. After a well-spotted foul from ref Mr Gardiner, Tom Carter curled the resulting free-kick onto the toes of Louie Powell who finished with aplomb. The second half brought more Park Grove pressure and an inspired substitution resulted in a fine finish from Lucas Torres, 30 seconds after coming onto the field. The match ended 3-0 in Park Grove’s favour. Park Grove’s third match was against eventual winners St George’s and despite the 2-0 scoreline in their favour, Park Grove played superbly with Harry Metcalf unquestionably man of the match with many incredible saves.
The fourth match pitted Park Grove against Hempland and it was an energy-sapping encounter with chance after chance for both sides. Unfortunately a late goal from Hempland settled the match but the confidence Park Grove took from that game was clear to see in their fifth match against St Mary’s. Jake Coulby-Ackroyd superb vision allowed Lucas Torres to open the scoring and resolute defending allowed Park Grove to hold on and edge the encounter by a solitary goal. Park Grove’s last match of the day was against Our Lady Queen of Martyr’s and despite the 5-0 loss, Park Grove had equipped themselves superbly against the top football teams in York.

Park Grove ended 4th out of 7 with two wins and four losses. Star players were Lucas Torres, whose lively performances galvanized many of Park Grove’s excellent attacks. Mani Cobb’s calmness and succinct passing was a huge positive and the team was really well led by Harry Metcalf who collected Park Grove’s trophy as the winners of League E.

A huge well done to all the children who represented our school and the excellent parental support we had throughout the afternoon. What a season it has been – you should all be so proud of your efforts and quite frankly it has been pleasure to coach you all!

I don’t think Park Grove has ever got that far in a football tournament before! Sadly that was Park Grove’s last game for this school year but Y6s can be on the secondary school team and Y5s can be on our team again! 😛 😛 😛
