Year 5/6 Swimming Gala Report – 8.12.15

On Tuesday 7th December 2015, 8 Park Grove children went to Archbishop School’s swimming pool to battle it out against 7 other schools.

Alexander Savkovic, Lucy Noble, Ivy Tegetmeier, Jaimie Farquharson, Helen Mackay, Lucas Torres, Tom Carter, George Phillips and their wonderful coach Miss Grainger took part in a Year 5 and 6 Swimming Gala last week on Tuesday. When they arrived, they started with the individual heats. First of all was Lucas with front crawl, followed by Lucy, who both made the 25-metre course look effortless.

Once they had rapidly succeeded a position that looked promising, it was time for Helen and Tom to do the breaststroke. Some may say it’s a walk in the park, but just try doing it at top speed under pressure! Of course, the duo coped magnificently and they too grasped a stable place on the leaderboard, although we were oblivious to our success…

Next up was Alexander and Jaimie, who had to swim one length of the pool in backstroke. Jaimie was away to get into the cool water after Alex’s splendid and swift performance when nerves suddenly spread like wildfire, stripping her of her confidence. Luckily, once she got going, she didn’t let her anxiety get in the way of the prize and she speedily reached the finish line.

Finally, George and Ivy came face to face with the dreaded butterfly. To rival the demanding stroke first was George, and looking around he had quite some competition. As predicted, though, George’s faultless accuracy made everybody else’s efforts look less like a butterfly and more like an ancient moth!

Now it was Ivy’s turn. As graceful as a swan, she slid into the water and assumed the starting position. The whistle blew and she was off. After no time at all, Ivy was at the other end of the pool, the conqueror of the butterfly and the winner of the race!

The next two races were the Medley Relay (with Alexander tackling backstroke again, Jaimie attempting breaststroke and Lucy and George approaching front crawl) and the Freestyle Relay (consisting of Tom, Lucas, Helen and Ivy). Both teams did exceedingly well, and displayed fantastic signs of skill, teamwork, sportsmanship and determination.

At the end of the relays, the winners were finally declared. In 1st place were Clifton with Rawcliffe School, in 2nd place were Robert Wilkinson Primary School and in 3rd place were Park Grove!

Overall, the participants did exceptionally well and should be proud to have represented Park Grove. Sadly, the Year 6s won’t be here next year to do it again but any current Year 4s or 5s interested for next year should look out for the opportunity – it is truly sensational and one that you will never forget!
