On Thursday 3rd April , Park Grove played Osbaldwick Primary School in the penultimate league fixture of the season. The first meeting between these sides ended in a thrilling 4-3 victory for Park Grove and this tie was equally dramatic.

In spite of the dark clouds hovering overhead, Park Grove started off the match confidently with Alfie Stewart and Louie Powell negating the odd threat from Osbaldwick forwards confidently. A dynamic midfield run from Jacob Martindale gave Park Grove an early corner from which Louie Powell side-footed home from five yards into the bottom left hand corner. It was Louie’s second goal against Osbaldwick from a corner this season. Despite having little possession, Osbaldwick equalised right at the end of the half to ensure the game was level 1-1 at half time.

Park Grove started the second half strongly and excellent movement from Robby Butler allowed Jordan Colebourn a clear run on goal and he put away the ball with aplomb into the top right hand corner of the net to give the home side a 2-1 lead. Only a couple of minutes later, Max Rigby’s speculative effort was spilled by the keeper and Robby Butler was there to pounce on the opportunity to give Park Grove a two goal advantage; 3-1.

Osbaldwick suddenly sprung to life and a sustained period of pressure resulted in a penalty kick, which despite a fantastic initial save from Morgan Zareba-Wynne, was gobbled up on the rebound to leave the match in the balance. Unfortunately, Park Grove could not hold on to the lead as one minute from time, a header from a corner dribbled into the net to make the final score, Park Grove 3 Osbaldwick 3.

Alfie Stewart was a revelation in defence and his commitment and leadership was one of the main reasons for the positive result for Park Grove. Robby Butler and Jacob Martindale both performed admirably and were at the heart of most of the excellent attacks in the first period and early on in the second half.

Our last league fixture is against Dunnington at home on Thursday 24th April. Please come and support the team if you can!
