KS2 Topic Ignition!

To start our brand new topic exploring the ancient Maya civilisation, all classes in key stage 2 enjoyed learning that chocolate was first used by the Mayans thousands of year ago! Of course, this didn’t taste like the chocolate we have today or come in the chocolate bars we know and love now, but instead the Mayans drank a chocolate drink that they called ‘xocolatl’ – this means ‘bitter water’!

We tried making our very own xocolatl using similar ingredients to the Mayans: we mixed cocoa powder, cinnamon, chilli and vanilla together and then dissolved in some milk before tasting…and we had some mixed reviews! Some loved the xocolatl and it’s safe to say some didn’t…but all enjoyed the experience to kickstart our exciting new topic!
