On Friday 13th March, Park Grove took part in the Peter Feasby hockey tournament at Energise sports centre in Acomb. The Park Grove team was comprised of Molly Slade, (team captain) Tomas Wormald, Katie Herbert, Martha Jones, William Gibson and Kyle Wilce.

On a bitterly cold evening, the Park Grove team, who were playing competitive hockey together for the first time, were faced with some very experienced opposition from Knavesmire, Copmanthorpe, Westfield and St Mary’s. By the end of the night, however, Park Grove had surpassed their own expectations and surprised the organisers and other sides with their determined attitude, excellent conduct and positive outlook.

The highlights of the evening were a strong draw against a difficult Knavesmire B team, a thrilling one-goal win against St Mary’s, and a narrow loss to Copmanthorpe A, which saw Tomas scoring by throwing himself into the opposition goal!

Molly was an inspirational captain throughout Park Grove’s six matches, leading by example in pushing forward and relentlessly winning the ball back for her team. William continually put the pressure on opposing sides with his breath-taking attacking runs down the pitch. Martha and Katie held the team together with their selfless performances, making well-judged tackles and quick-fire passes to assist their team mates. And last, but by no means least, Kyle and Tomas formed a rock-solid defensive partnership which, after warding off countless attempts on goal from the eventual competition winners, left one veteran hockey player commenting that they should get a call-up from the English hockey team!

While the Park Grove team did not progress to the finals, the children gave an exceptional performance and supported each other whole-heartedly throughout the event. They did Park Grove proud!

The team would like to thank Mrs Herbert, Mrs Jones and Mr Currie for getting them there and back from the tournament.
