The senses

The children have been investigating the 5 senses this week and all had a go at tasting different flavoured crisps, smelling spices, touching different objects, listening to sounds and carrying out an eye test.

Oliver’s garden

In English the children have been reading a story about a young boy who discovered lots of vegetables for the first time in his Grandpa’s garden. They have been creating their own vegetables patches using watercolour pencils!

Phonics stay and learn session

Parents were given the opportunity to watch the teaching of a phonics session to gain a greater understanding of how it is taught to their children. The last session is next Thursday (the 23rd) and there are still spaces left for Year 1 parents to sign up.

Homework 

Spellings this week will focus on the ‘igh’ phoneme in words and variations may include ‘ie’ for fried, ‘i-e’ split digraph for time or ‘i’ on its own for kindly. Also, Abacus homework will allow the children to practise their time skills. Perhaps you could practise reading the time at home?

English artwork

After reading Oliver’s Vegetables, we began creating our own allotment artwork inspired by illustrations from the story! First, we sketched our pathways then began adding different fruit, vegetables and objects to the surroundings. We’ll be activating the watercolours soon to make our work more effective!

Fruity lists!

We read the story of Oliver’s Fruit Salad and used commas to list all of the different fruit in the story. Some of us also used expanded noun phrases to describe the fruit too!

Subtraction skills

We are using the Chrome books to consolidate our subtraction skills. We can find the missing number in a sum by using a number line to count back. It’s great to see how many we get right in two minutes. Class 2 are making such good progress.

Forest Schools

We loved our nature trail through the wood discovering the first signs of Spring. We discovered bluebells and daffodils. The trees have new shoots and are beginning to wake up. Very exciting!

Art Enrichment

On Thursday morning we were very lucky to be visited by Mrs Brooks to have a special morning of art. We made our own version of Oliver’s vegetables by using the vegetables to print with. Everyone had a great time and really improved their observation skills.
