EYFS newsletter

17th January 2014

The children have had another busy week and are still thoroughly enjoying learning about the Polar regions, as well as showing us all their fantastic ideas! This week we’ve labelled polar animals, practiced our fine motor skills by hammering nails into tree stumps, worked with a friend to do ‘tree wrapping’, been on Arctic adventures, built amazing structures and lands in the

Construction Area and played with our friends. We’ve learnt about non-fiction books, rescued animals who were trapped in ice, and practiced our egg and pencil rolls. Wow! What a week!

In Maths we have been talking about capacity this week and trying hard to compare two or three objects to see which holds the most water or sand. The children have loved filling socks in the sand tray and this has        encouraged lots of talk, with lots of children using full and empty, or heavier and lighter, to compare the socks!

Next week we will be continuing to learn about different polar animals.

Forest Schools

This week we met ‘Sage’, one of the woodland folk who live in the trees at Forest Schools. The children enjoyed finding Sage and playing with her. Everyone enjoyed going on a hunt and finding different things, as well as making dens for little animals.

Homework

This week why not make a cake (the best bit being you can eat it at the end!). You could use the scales to weigh the ingredients and look for numbers in the kitchen – on the cooker, on the scales, in the recipe book etc. We are going to do lots of work on ‘taking away’ next week, so why not try practising this with different objects at home?

You might like to find out more about polar animals. I wonder where you could look?

Don’t forget your handwriting and maths challenges too.

PE

This term the children are continuing their games sessions with Mr Barratt on a Wednesday morning. On a Friday we are exploring ways of travelling in gymnastics.

Next week…

Monday: handwriting books in school for new letter sounds

Tuesday: wellies for Forest Schools

Wednesday: PE kit

Thursday: Maths Challenge Books returned to school

Friday: library books and PE kit

Stay and Play at 2.30pm – please sign up if you haven’t done so already.
