Football League Match – Park Grove 2 Lakeside 3

Park Grove’s opening football league fixture took place on a Thursday afternoon at home against Lakeside Primary School. In front of a well supported and vocal crowd, the match got off to a quick start with Lakeside spraying the ball around with style but Louie Powell and Ben Bellerby resolute defending and well-timed interventions ensured there were only speculative half-chances. Then out from nowhere, midway through the half, a lightning quick counter attack from Jacob Martindale resulted in a slick through ball to Robby Butler who crossed with perfect precision for Kyle Wilce to finish expertly with aplomb. Park Grove continued with this confidence through to the half-time whistle to hold a slender lead at the break.

A much more purposeful fast start from Park Grove, in spite of the energy-sapping conditions, resulted in a wonderful second goal. Robby Butler again was instrumental with a delicious through ball to Kyle Wilce whose persistence allowed him to nip in front of the covering defender to finish off superbly from a tight angle. Two nil Park Grove. Despite the cushion of a two goal lead, Park Grove continued to attack and Robby Butler was extremely unlucky that his swerving free kick, as good quality as a Leighton Baines or Angel Di Maria special, skimmed the bar with the keeper clearly beaten.

Lakeside, who had reached the final of a tournament last week, found a sudden sperge of confidence and a quick counter attack reduced the defecit to a single goal. Two minutes later, the comeback was complete with a good finish from outside the box. Despite Park Grove pushing for the winner, it was ultimately Lakeside who got the winner when a fortunate ricochet resulted in a tap in finish from close range. The final score was Park Grove 2 Lakeside 3.

Despite the defeat, this was an extremely positive performance with Park Grove passing the ball superbly and creating numerous chances. Star players were Ben Bellerby, who on his debut for the school, was absolutely outstanding in defence. Harry Metcalf made several stunning saves, keeping Park Grove in the game on many occasions. Robby Butler, once again, was the heartbeat of many of Park Grove’s effective attacks and his energetic performance had everything bar a individual goal. Kyle Wilce’s two goals were both excellent finishes and he was a constant thorn in Lakeside’s defence.

Park Grove play their second league match against Acomb away this coming Monday.
